I've ignored my pothos for a hot minute, and it tried to climb upward away from the trellis. There was nothing to get attached to anymore, so it seems like it got super thick instead of long. But what are those brown things on it??
I don’t think it’s scale infestation. It looks weird though, like some mutation.

Do they squish? If yes, scale bugs. If they dont squish with pressure some form of mutation of infection of the actual plant. If its hard all the way through, or looks likenplant matter when cut into, def a mutation.

I’d say a very funky mutation. You should keep growing it and see what happens.

I don’t think it’s scale, it looks like root buds but… Wrong, the kind of mutant growth you get from an overdose of plant hormones (I guess auxins, in the case of roots). No idea what triggered it, though.
Looks like a weird mutation to me I don’t think these are pests since they are busting out from under the “skin”. Scale just sits on top. I’d quarantine and treat with 70% isopropyl alcohol for a week or 2 to see if there’s a change, but I’d keep this weirdo going and see what it does.
Edit: it does like it has some scale in the 3rd picture, the white spots, but I think the brown nodules are mutated root buds.

The plant is shooting out roots everywhere, but this isn’t normal. If I were you I wouldn’t stop growing it just to see what happens. And if you do keep growing it then update us sometime!!!

This makes me want to die whether it’s bugs or a mutation or not. The sight makes me wish I could peel my skin off. 😭

I’ve got some hibiscus cuttings doing this right now. It’s a butt ton of aerial roots wooding over.
This is a rare case where basically the plant is overshooting its roots production. Nothing to worry about and will form a lovely root nest and will make the plant in the long run damn crazy grower.

It’s roots. Nothing to worry about.
